PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Acres of forested wetlands in Portland called Canco Woods, is known as an urban escape for its neighbors. When the land was put on the market last spring, the community put together a grassroots effort to preserve it.

The 12.75 acre plot of land is being sold by a subsidiary of Central Maine Power, Union Water Power Co.

Neighbors of the park on Torrey St., and other neighborhoods are raising money as a group called Friends of Canco Woods. They teamed up with the Trust for Public Land conservationists who will ultimately own the property. TPL Project Manager, Gregg Caporossi, says Portland Trails has agreed to maintain Canco Woods upon ownership.

"It's a project about this community that has come together around this opportunity and said we want to see these woods protected," says Caporossi, "and not only do we want to see these woods protected we also want to help in a big way."

The cost of the plot is $350,000, and another $50,000 in additional costs. TPL and the Friends of Canco Woods have $100,000 left to raise by December 14.

Caporossi says if they fail to raise the money by the deadline, they will then ask Union Water Power Co. for a contract extension, or a reduction in the purchase price.

TPL is currently the only potential buyer expressing interest in the plot.
