PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Civil libertarians say they're asking Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster to drop his plan to use a post cards mailing to show whether hundreds of people voted fraudulently in the last election.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine said Friday it's sending a cease and desist letter to Webster. With a copy to the U.S. Justice Department. It's prepared to go to court if Webster doesn't back off.

Webster apologized Thursday for saying "dozens of black people" unfamiliar to election officials showed up in rural towns to cast ballots Nov. 6. But he later said that after his term as GOP chairman is over, he'll send out 1,000 post cards to newly registered voters to see if any are returned.

The ACLU says that would violate federal law.
