BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Production at a local Hostess Bakery has stopped, as hundreds of employees there have joined a strike at Hostess production plants around the country.

Members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union started striking in Biddeford at five o'clock Friday afternoon. Union members say Hostess is cutting wages, healthcare benefits, and taking away their pensions.

Local Union chapter president John Jordan says the workers would have accepted the cuts if they felt that everyone in the company was making the same sacrifice.

"The people are willing to work, they're willing to do their part, but they're not willing to work for people who are going to steal from them," Jordan said. "That's how the members feel, they're very adamant and we support them in that decision."

In a statement released Friday, Hostess Brands responded to the strike:

"A widespread strike will cause Hostess Brands to liquidate if we are unable to produce or deliver products. If that's the case, the company will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,300-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders."
