DAMARISCOTTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Mainers continue to gather supplies to help hurricane victims in New York and New Jersey.

In Damariscotta, a team of volunteers is filling a tractor trailer to take clothing, tools and other necessities to people in Rockaway, Long island and Staten Island.

They say the truck is already half-full and more donations are coming. In Rockland, Schooner Bay Taxi company is taking two vans of supplies to New Jersey Saturday night, and bringing back hurricane victims to stay at the Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit. Taxi company owner Chris Merritt says he heard about the hotel offer of rooms earlier this week on NEWS CENTER, and offered to provide transportation.

Everyone involved with helping the hurricane victims said it is "the right thing to do".

The Rockland vans will collect donations Saturday in front of Maritime Energy on Route One, and then head south late that night. In Damariscotta, the big truck will keep taking donations through next week. They particularly need tools to help rebuild the thousands of homes damaged by the storm, as well as warm clothing, food and other necessities.
