AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The leading PAC opposed to Maine's gay marriage referendum raised nearly $1-million in October, with most of the money coming from the National Organization for Marriage.
In its latest financial report, Protect Marriage Maine says it raised $950-thousand from October 1st through the 23rd -that pushed its overall fundraising to $1.4 million.
The Kennebec Journal reports that $800-thousand came from the National Organization for Marriage, a national anti-gay-marriage group; the Knights of Columbus gave $100-thousand.
Mainers United for Marriage, which is leading the campaign in favor of the ballot question asking Mainers if they want to legalize same-sex marriage, says it brought in $964-thousand over the same time period, bringing its total war chest to 4.3 million dollars.
