LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The rain didn't keep people away from day two of the Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston Sunday, though it may have cut a few rides short.

Saturday was the walk/run, Sunday participants cycled up to 100 miles, more than 4,000 people took part.

It's a major fundraiser for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in Lewiston, founded by actor, Patrick Dempsey, who's from Maine. He's inspired by his mother who has battled cancer 7 times.

Many of today's riders were inspired by someone they love either currently battling, or who lost the fight against the disease.

"We're riding in honor of our friend Tina who passed away from cancer earlier this year, so its tough but you do it because there are a lot of people who are sick, but there are also a lot of people who are recovering and this is a great way to support them and this is also a really worthy cause. The Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing is a great resource for people in Maine so we're doing it for a lot of reasons," said rider, Jed Jankowski.

The event each year usually helps raise over $1-million for the Dempsey Center.
