PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A Maine State Police trooper was honored today for the actions he took back in June when he stopped a wrong way driver on I-295.

Trooper Douglas Cropper was cited in a congressional statement commending his actions. Today he was presented with a plaque from Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

"Trooper Cropper says he was simply doing his job, but it is my belief he went above and beyond to protect lives and he saved many in the process", Pingree said.

On June 29th Cropper spotted an elderly man driving North in the Southbound lane on 295. The trooper sped along several city streets in portland before getting on the highway, cutting through a crossover and nudging his cruiser out in front of the oncoming vehicle. The driver crashed into the cruiser, no one was injured.

"The timing, everything was perfectly timed, whether it was the green lights or the fact that no one got in front of me, I wouldn't change a thing", said Cropper.

Trooper Cropper will be honored again next month at an event being sponsored by the Independent Transportation Network.
