PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- On one day each month, dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants volunteer their time to treat uninsured children in Portland.

The Bright Smiles Dental Clinic treats about a dozen children every month that don't have dental insurance and haven't yet enrolled in MaineCare. The children often come to the clinic in pain, with serious dental problems. The volunteers make it their mission to put the kids on the right track toward oral health.

"They're coming to a different culture, food is different," Dr. Demi Kouzounas said. "I'm sure a lot of these kids have probably never, in their own countries, been involved with oral health at all, maybe never had a cleaning, maybe never saw a dentist."

The Bright Smiles Program donated more than twelve thousand dollars in dental services during the last school year. The program is currently looking for more dentists, hygienists and assistants to volunteer.
