PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Have you noticed lately that you've seen less from certain friends on Facebook? Well they're probably not "un-friending" you. They've probably moved to your acquaintances list.
NEWS CENTER'S Social Media Correspondent, Brett Whitmarsh, joins us now to explain what an acquaintances list is.
How did this come about?
We've been talking about Facebook lists for about a year now. They can be very handy, but the "acquaintances" lists is pretty new. If you have ever clicked on a post from a friend and selected to see less from that person, they probably were moved over to that list.
So how do we know who is on the list?
First you need to find your lists. On the left hand side of your news feed, click on where it says friends or more. This should take you to the list page. Once you do then look for "close friends and acquaintances." Now if you've ever made a list of friends it would be here too.
Click on the list and see if anyone is already there. Over on the right hand side of the screen you can see who is a member of this list. From here, you can edit who is in the list. You can always take someone out, but you can just type their name here and add them.
Now what if you want to keep closer tabs on the friends you seem to always miss out on?
In that case you will want to use the "Close Friends" lists. You'll notice the effects of this right away. Anyone you add to this list you will get an immediate notification of anything and everything they do. So every time they update their status, post a photo... Consider this a more beefed up feature of Facebook notifications.
Because you're going to start getting a lot of notifications. So don't drive yourself crazy. That said, if someone you know doesn't post too often, then this is a great feature so you don't miss anything from them.
What does the restricted list do?
The restricted list is for anyone you're not really ready to un-friend just yet, but you want them to see less of your life. You know how when you post a status, or a photo you have to option to make that public or to friends? Well if you put anyone on the restricted list they can only see what posts you make public -- that's the little globe icon.
