PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Fire Department honored people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty Saturday.

The 19th Annual Merit Awards recognized dozens of firefighters for their courageous and life-saving efforts. NEWS CENTER's Amanda Hill emceed the event this year. Among those receiving awards were three good samaritans who gave lifesaving CPR to a cardiac arrest victim at Hadlock Field and the firefighters and EMT's who responded to the India Street shooting in July. Firefighter Jonathan Denham was one of the first on the scene.

"Being prepared for the calls as we are, being able to change gears and kind of get ramped up for something like that, the crews worked together very well and it came together very nicely"

One man was killed in that July 11th shooting. The homicide remains unsolved.
