PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - About 200 supporters of same sex marriage gathered at Portland City Hall as the fight over Question 1 begins to heat up.
In 8-weeks voters will go the polls and cast their ballots on Question 1 which would legalize same sex marriage in Maine.
The goal was to fire up supporters and shine some attention on the issue. While supporters say things are looking good for their cause right now they know their opponents have not yet taken their best shot at convincing voters to say no on one.
On hand to support the effort were Portland's Mayor, a couple of city councilors, members of the clergy, and a same sex couple from Freeport that's been together for 18-years.
"I want to refer to my beloved Linda as my wife, rather than partner or the even worse domestic partner, what a clunky title that is", said Sara Dowling.
After the legislature passed and the governor signed into law a bill legalizing same sex marriage, voters shot it down in November of 2009. But supporters say a lot has changed since then including a lot of voters minds.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland is holding a number of events in opposition to the same sex marriage question. This weekend it kicked off the first of several state wide meetings focusing on marriage as being the union of a man and a woman.
A separate group campaigning against Question 1, Protect Marriage Maine, does not have any scheduled events coming up.
