BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--Bangor police said while public attention to the bath salts epidemic has been declining, they have seen a spike in bath salt use the past couple of months.
Last year Bangor had a town hall meeting about bath salts. Bangor Police Sgt. Paul Edwards said the meeting was helpful and informative and Bangor Police starting receiving fewer calls of bath salt use in Bangor.
However, in the last few months Bangor Police have seen an increase in bath salt use. Edwards said one of the potential challenges with bath salts is that it is rumored that the chemicals have been changed, but Edwards said the test kits Bangor Police are using are still working.
"What we've been testing is, is still testing positive with the kits we have. That I guess is a good thing and hasn't changed chemically so it's showing a negative test for the test kits we have. At least that they're showing positive and we are arresting people for possession of those hallucinogenic drugs," Edwards said.
Police said side effects of bath salts can be paranoia, aggression and hallucinations. If you know or suspect someone is on bath salts call your local police department.
