BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - At high tide the U.S. Navy's latest ship, "Michael Murphy" set sail from Bath Iron Works.
There was a time when the Navy quietly rolled out it's newly built ships, but these days it's a community celebration acknowledging another major accomplishment for one of the state's largest private employers.
This ship like other Navy destroyers is named after a hero, Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who died while helping to rescue his team in Afghanistan. Lt. Murphy was severely injured but managed to call for help, saving 3 other seals. He was killed after making the call.
"The inspiration that the crew takes knowing that someone of his character, courage, sacrifice that his spirit lives on in this ship is something very special very meaningful to the sailors that are going to serve on her", said U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Vandroff.
BIW has 5 More Navy ships under contract and will be actively bidding to win more.
