PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Two cruise ship companies that make port calls in Maine have agreed to buy lobster from a Portland seafood distributor.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said Wednesday that Norwegian Cruise Line will buy 5,000 pounds of lobster from Ready Seafood for the Norwegian Dawn's upcoming stops in Portland. She said Celebrity Cruises has agreed to buy 3,800 pounds of lobster from Ready Seafood for the Celebrity Summit's visits.
Pingree says she's hopeful that other cruise lines will also commit to buying lobsters from Maine companies while visiting Portland and Bar Harbor.
A strong harvest this summer has resulted in an oversupply of lobsters on the market and depressed prices for fishermen.
