LIMERICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine's apple picking season is one we usually associate with fall, but this year, mother nature has other plans and many "Pick Your Own" orchards are opening a few weeks ahead of schedule.
Commissioner of Agriculture, Walt Whitcomb, says because of the early spring most crops throughout the state have come early, including apples.
In Limerick, Libby and Son U-Pick says this is the earliest they've ever picked. Aaron Libby says they've already gone through their Paula Reds crop, and are on track to run out before Columbus Day.
At Ricker Hill Orchard in Turner, some varieties that aren't even supposed to be ripe yet are falling off the trees, leaving the orchard to scramble to pick early.
The early start could also mean an early end, so Libby says this is not the year to wait to get your apples. For a list of "pick your own" apple orchards, click here.
