(NEWS CENTER) - Republican Representative and Senate Candidate Todd Akin is under fire after comments he made Monday about "legitimate rape."
In a talk show discussion about abortion, Missouri Rep. Akin said he believes that in cases of "legitimate rape" a woman's body will somehow shut off the ability to be impregnated.
The incident has drawn outcries from both sides of the aisle.
The story may have national implications. NEWS CENTER spoke with NBC Political Director and White House Correspondent Chuck Todd about that potential.
Todd spoke about what this might mean for the Republican party's hope to take control of the Senate, whether it drives an insurmountable wedge in the gender gap and whether voters will even remember come November.
