PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Freeport middle school teacher charged with terrorizing his students has pleaded no contest in Cumberland County court.
58-year old David Mason made what his lawyer described as an "off-hand remark" to his 7th grade class. Police said Mason told his class something about being so upset with them that he could take an M16 to the building, but that it was clear he had no intention of hurting anyone. Though the comment was meant as a joke, some students and parents complained, and the matter was brought to police.
Under the plea, if Mason does not break the law in the next 60 days, the terrorizing charge will be dismissed.
