AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Central Maine Power says a telephone scam aimed at taking money from small businesses in southern Maine is continuing.
The utility says customers report getting a call, and sometimes personal visits, from a man named "Carlos" who tells the businesses that they must deposit cash or a money order into an account to avoid an immediate service disconnection.
CMP officials say they've reported the scam calls to the police and the Maine attorney general's office. They say anyone who receives such calls should report them to police.
CMP urges customers to confirm the authenticity of any call for payment on their utility accounts, and report suspicious calls to the local police.
