MADISON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A financial debate between Somerset County Jail and the state Board of Corrections has now been resolved.
Jail officials stopped accepting out-of-county inmates back in May because the state had withheld 300-thousand dollars in payments to house those prisoners.
The state's 2008 jail consolidation law turned most of Maine's county jails into temporary housing facilities where inmates stay until being transferred to 4 regional cost-effective jails.. Including the Somerset. However, that plan included reimbursement for those jails... But officials with somerset county said they weren't being paid.
The jail has now agreed to once again start taking out-of-county inmates once the board agreed to pay back 280-thousand dollars owed from last year... And fulfill its annual obligation.
