(NEWS CENTER) -- The U. S. Women's 8 with Coxswain turned in a dominating performance on Thursday and won the Olympic Gold Medal at Dorney Lake in Windsor, England.

The Americans took control of the 2000-meter race from the start. They had a one second lead through 500 meters which they expanded to more than two seconds at the halfway point.
Top rival Canada, which had finished second by just three one-hundredths of a second at a recent World Cup race, was second throughout. Trailing my more than two seconds, they put on their best charge through the final 500 meters. The closed the gap slightly, but the American women remained in control. The final margin of victory was just under one and a half seconds.
Boothbay Harbor's Ellie Logan was among six members of the team who earned a second consecutive gold medal. The medals were presented by Anita DeFrantz of the International Olympic Committee. She was an American who won a bronze medal in Montreal in 1976.
After the medal ceremony, the Americans, Canadians and Dutch happily posed for photographs together in front of the Olympic podium.
