BREWER, Maine (AP) - A new accountable care approach to health care is being announced in Brewer.

Penobscot Community Health Care is joining Eastern Maine Health System's accountable care organization, for patients who are covered by Medicare. PCHC was selected by EMHS to be the first organization to join this new effort, and is said to be the first community health center in Maine to actively embrace the accountable care effort.

An announcement is being made Monday.

Accountable care is a new approach in today's challenging health care environment.

For years, health care providers were paid for units of health care services and procedures delivered. Through this new model, providers will be reimbursed for the quality of care provided, for clearly improving outcomes for patients, and for reducing overall cost of health care.
