AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- City officials in Auburn voted Monday night to build a new two-rink ice arena right next to the Auburn Mall.
It's a decision they hope will attract more youth hockey leagues to the area, but as Lewiston has struggled with the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, Auburn is moving forward cautiously.
The new rink will be built on Turner Street, in the midst of shops and restaurants -- hoping to boost the local economy in more ways than one.
Right now, local teams play at Ingersoll Arena. City manager, Clinton Deschene, says the new arena will have much more seating, a better heating system, and will be in an area that's easier to access.
Jim Cain, the owner of the Colisee, says he wishes the city the best, but hopes they understand what they're taking on.
He says the market doesn't appear to be growing in population, and agrees, they should move ahead cautiously.
City officials could have a design as early as this summer, and hope to start breaking ground in September.
