(KPNX) - Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett says he may remove President Obama from the ballot unless he sees proof the president was born in the United States.
Bennett made the remark during an interview with KFYI radio last Thursday.
He says that although he believes President Obama was born in Hawaii, many of his constituents don't, and as such he must see proof.
"My responsibility as Secretary of State is to make sure that the ballots in Arizona are correct," he explained.
Bennett says he sent a request to Hawaii asking for confirmation that President Obama's birth certificate does exist.
Arizona State House Democratic Leader Chad Campbell says Bennett is politically motivated, looking to gain supporters in advance of a possible 2014 run for governor.
"This is a fringe movement by people who are on the very fringes of the political sphere and Mr. Bennett is now catering to them," Campbell said.
Even Governor Jan Brewer, who's had a rocky relationship with President Obama, took the president's side on the birther issue.
"I've had an opportunity to speak with a prior Governor, and she indicated to me with all due process and trustworthiness that indeed she had seen the birth certificate. It was a valid birth certificate. So that's the story from where I know it," Brewer said.
