TRENTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--The first phase in a three phase project to expand the Island Explorer is now complete.

For almost 15 years the Island Explorer has been giving people rides to Acadia National Park free of charge but the bus services have never had a permanent place to set up shop until now.

The Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton is the first step in a three phase expansion project for the Island Explorer.  The public was invited to tour the facility during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

General manager of The Island Explorer Paul Murphy says the changes could increase the number of passengers using the buses.

The buses start running on June 23rd.
