WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- IDEXX Laboratories has broken ground on a $35 million expansion to its corporate headquarters in Westbrook. The new building will accommodate as many as 300 new employees.

IDEXX is a Maine success story. The company that started with a handful of employees in 1984 now employs 5000 people worldwide. 1800 of them are based in Westbrook. The company has managed to buck the nationwide trend, expanding even as the economy went south.

So it is no surprise that this groundbreaking attracted Governor Paul LePage (R-Maine), Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine 1) and Congressman Mike Michaud (D-Maine 2). Gov. LePage said, "IDEXX is not only providing jobs in Maine. It's providing career paths for Mainers. And that's what's really critical in Maine."

IDEXX also is expected to create more than 100 trade jobs to build the 107,000 square foot LEED certified building. And the company is hoping the building itself will benefit employees with its health and wellness center and a workspace design that is supposed to foster collaboration.

IDEXX makes products to keep pets and livestock healthy.
