NEWS CENTER -- One person is dead and two are injured following an early morning fire at a home in Waterboro.
Fire crews arrived on the scene of the fire just before 2 o'clock Sunday morning. The home, which is on Paradise Lane in North Waterboro, was a total loss.
Investigators say 50 year old, Mary Gilman was found dead in the home. 46 year old, Shawn Girard, of Old Orchard Beach, was staying at the home that night; he was taken to Maine Medical Center with burns and smoke inhalation. A fire fighter suffered minor injuries from a slip and fall at the scene.
Investigators say the fire likely started near a wood stove quickly spread. Girard says he woke up to smoke around 1:30am and ran to a neighbor's house to call 9-1-1.
Investigators say Gilman's body was found at the top of the second story stairs; it appears she was trying to rescue a family pet. An examination later showed she died from smoke inhalation.
