OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man had to rescued in the city Wednesday morning after he was injured while working on the hydro electric dam that sits in the Penobscot River.
The man had been working on the dam along with a crew of three others. Responders say a piece of the dam came lose and trapped the man after it landed on his leg.
Firefighters in Old Town were eventually able to get him off of the dam, which is owned and operated by Black Bear Hydro Partners LLC in Milford.
Company officials say that the crew had been performing routine maintenance on the dam when the accident happened. Officials there also say that workers never go out on the dam without a tether.
Responders say that thankfully this man had one.
"Luckily that's where he was," said Steve O'Malley, who is the fire chief in Old Town, "he did not go into the water...over the dam. He just was on a resting ledge that's part of the dam...so we were able to get a long board and our guys out there in cold-water suits and bring him to shore."
The worker was taken to the hospital. The company says that he has since been released.
