ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- People trying to get into the Bear Brew Pub in Orono using a fake ID used to be an issue. Manager Kelley Syphers said just a couple of years ago one bouncer was confiscating a number of fake IDs every night.

"He would take in an average of 10 a night," Syphers said.

But those days are over.

Syphers said because the Bear Brew Pub was confiscating so many fake ID's just a few years ago, it led them to buy an ID scanner to make it easier to detect fake IDs.

"Then we bought the scanner and word got out and now we really don't have a problem," Syphers said

According to police fake IDs are a recurring problem.
So to help places that sell alcohol, they offer classes to teach employees how to spot a fake ID.

"Some of the things we look for is basically the quality. Sometimes it has to do with the print and maybe the hologram and those are some of the more particular things quick reference ones you can look for," Sgt. Scott Scripture of the Orono Police Department said.

Syphers said the Bear Brew Pub takes advantage of the classes and employees are required to take classes every year.

Sergeant Scripture says if someone is caught with a fake ID and is trying to buy alcohol for themselves or another underage drinker, police will enforce the law.

"We're pretty strict about it. We enforce it vigorously as far as furnishing and the supplying of alcohol to minors using the fake id's because one leads into the next and those are the problems," Scripture said.

Problems that Syphers said the Bear Brew Pub sees less frequently thanks to its scanner, and some help from the police.
