BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--When Life Flight started 14 years ago, Maine was the only state in the country that didn't have a helicopter service for picking up medical patients.  Now Life Flight of Maine is looking to expand its services by adding an airplane.

Life Flight treats about 15 hundred patients a year.  Executive Director Thomas Judge says a plane is more efficient than a helicopter when the flight is over 175 miles.  Judge expects the plane to be used about 250 times a year.

The plane would not eliminate the need for helicopter paramedics or ground EMS.  The Life Flight plane would be based out of Bangor International Airport.

Life Flight is hoping to raise the three and a half million dollars for the plan through private donations by next year.
