ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--There is an opening for the new chancellor for the University of Maine system.
Candidates are taking tours of the U Maine campuses at Portland, Orono, and Fort Kent to meet with university staff members, students and the general public to explain what their ideas and take questions from the audience.
One of the candidates, Jim Page, is originally from Caribou, Maine.
Page is currently the chief executive officer for the James W. Sewall Company, and he is also an adjunct teacher at the University of Maine.
Page believes his experience in both academics and the private sector could help him as chancellor.
"What you can bring from the private sector is the experiences of how to react to complex problems, and how to develop processes, teams, initiatives etcetera that react to the contingencies either short term or long term that yield effective results from that," Page said.
If Page becomes the next chancellor, one of his goals is to put structures and processes into place so people and the state of Maine can justify investing in the University of Maine during the long term.
"Because it's that engagement between the public and the institutions which is essential for the health of the institutions and as I said at the very beginning, for the health of the State of Maine. There is no other entity in the state that has the scope and the potential to be positively effective throughout the state that the university system has," Page said.
Page believes these types of forums are important to meet different people, and get feedback from the public.
Two other chancellor candidates will be at the University of Maine in Orono latter this week to talk about the position.
