AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - For the first time ever, the Houlton band of Maliseets -- a Native American tribe from that area -- has a tribal representative in the Statehouse.
Governor Paul LePage gave the oath of office to Rep. David Slagger.
He's doctoral student at the University of Maine.
Tribal Chief Brenda Commander says her tribe has waited a long time to have their own representative.
"I feel we've been invisible for the past 15 years, basically, that's why this position is so important. We have representation here and there will finally be a voice in the Statehouse for the Maliseets."
"I'm gonna be an observer for the most part," says Slagger, "I'm a rookie, a freshman, so I'll observe and watch and talk with the other tribal representatives and the Chief and Council and see what they want. Because I work for the people."
The Maliseet tribe has about 1,100 members and is recognized by the Federal Government.
