DRESDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Senator Susan Collins had to see the deterioration of the bridge on Route 197 for herself.
On Friday she met with officials from Richmond, Dresden and the Maine Department of Transportation to see the 80 year old span.
The state is applying for a grant through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program to cover $10.8 million of the $25 million replacement project.
Two trucks have a hard time passing each other at the same time because the span is so narrow.
Officials from the river towns say the swinging part of the bridge often gets stuck open and the detour is 18 miles long.
