GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Counseling services were made available to all University of Southern Maine students following the death of a 18-year old student earlier this week.

The body of Jacob Lord, a freshman from Jay, was discovered in his dorm room Tuesday night at the Upton-Hastings residence hall located on USM's Gorham campus.

The cause of death has not been released, but officials fear he may have taken his own life. This is the third death of a USM student in the past three months. Two other students died earlier in the semester, one has been confirmed as a suicide.

The university has launched a new program called 'USM Cares'. It offers early screening for students concerning depression and stress. Faculty and students are also being trained to recognize the warning signs of suicide. If you would like more information about the counseling services available at USM you can go to this website, http://usm.maine.edu/uhcs.
