AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials in Auburn have reopened Route 4 between the city and Turner after of a serious accident.
The crash involved a pickup truck, a car and a tractor trailer.
According to police, an 85-year-old man driving the pick-up truck swerved across the center line, clipping a tractor trailer and a diesel fuel tank it was carrying. That truck is owned by Richard Carrier Trucking out of Skowhegan.
Fuel then spilled under the tires of the tractor trailer, causing the driver to lose control of the truck. He crashed into a nearby house, which was empty at the time. The woman who lives there had left a few minutes before the accident.
The kitchen is destroyed, and the house was actually moved off of its foundation. The tractor trailer spilled about a hundred gallons of diesel fuel, which the Department of Environmental Protection is helping clean up. The elderly driver of the pick-up truck was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The pickup also crashed into another car after the initial accident. That driver was also not injured.
