LEWISTON, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- Cyclist from across the country took to the streets Sunday for the third annual Dempsey Challenge.

The event raises money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at CMMC in Lewiston.

Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey was at the event. He addressed the crowd before the race kicked off describing it as "magical." The money raised from the event is used to treat cancer patients at the Dempsey Center, where all services are free of charge.

There were several cycling distances to choose from. There was a 10, 25, 50, 70, and 100 mile trek. The 100 mile route went through Lewiston all the way to Mechanic Falls.

Dempsey says what separates this event from others, is the spirit behind every rider and supporter. "The spirit behind the ride is remarkable and I think the collective of that emotion is what propels people to finish. It's and amazing experience." Dempsey told NEWS CENTER about the race.

There was also a 5 and 10k run and walk. And since the event is always such a success, registration has already begun for next year. It will be held on October 13 and 14th of 2012.
