October is National Walk or Bike to School Month!  Last year 58 Maine schools participated in events like "Walking Busses" or "Bike Trains," ways for children to walk or bike to school in ways that are safe and fun.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine organizes Safe Routes to School, efforts to encourage children to walk or bike, and to reduce dangers, real or perceived.  Check out just a couple of the many publications they have on their website: Be a Safe Walker, and Be a Safe Bike Driver.

Be a safe pedestrian.  Walk against traffic (on the left side of the road).  Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible.

Cars, be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially children.  Always stop for people in the crosswalk.  Stay at least three feet away from a bike when passing.
