GRAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Wilkies Beach in Gray has been forced to close after tests revealed high E-Coli levels Wednesday afternoon.
"The main concern is that if anyone, particularly younger children, infants were to swallow the water and get that E-Coli bacteria into their digestive system, they are going to have some health issues," stated Dean Bennett, director of the town's recreation department.
Bennett says a flock of geese, numbering as many as four or five hundred, has been taking over the beach most evenings. The same issue forced the beach to close last year.
"In the last 5 or 6 years it seems to be escalating," added Bennett. "Years and years ago, some of the residents said there used to be no issue with geese on the beach."
Town officials have retested the water and hope to have the results early Friday morning. If the water quality has improved, they plan to reopen the beach.
The town is working with the Crystal Lake property owners association to come up with a solution.
