BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office say the cause of a fire that severely damaged a church in Brunswick was electrical in nature.
A passer-by reported the fire at the Unitarian Universalist church on Pleasant Street just after 1:00am Monday.
When crews arrived, they found heavy flames on two floors at the rear of the building. That fire spread through the roof and attic, making its way to the front of the church.
The church is still standing but officials say there is a lot of fire, smoke and water damage.
The church dates back to the early 1800's. We're told that many of the old documents and artifacts that were kept there were saved, including an old Bible donated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
