LEWISTON, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- The cleanup continues across the south after last months devastating tornados. The Androscoggin Humane Society is doing it's part to help.

Staff and volunteers welcomed fifty dogs Saturday morning ranging from 4 months to 4 years old. They came from the Shelby Humane Society in Alabama where they have been flooded with dogs that have either been found as strays, or brought in by their families because they have lost their homes to the current storms.

Jennifer Miller is the executive director at the animal shelter in Alabama and says that help is needed. "There is a huge need right now to care for all the strays. You go through Tuscaloosa and you can find dogs everywhere." She says by bringing the dogs up to Maine and New Hampshire it frees up space in their own shelter so they are able to take care of more dogs. Miller says that Maine is perfect for these dogs because not only will they get adopted quickly, but also because of the state's spay and neuter regulations it's less likely for over population and crowding.

Refuge leagues from across the state came to the dog drop off Saturday morning to pick up dogs for their own shelters.  For the Androscoggin Humane Society dogs will be available for adoption on Wednesday. Manager Zachary Black says that they have already got massive amounts of emails and phone calls inquiring about the dogs, so he expects that they will go fast.

As for the crew from the Shelby Humane Society, they left as quick they came. After they unloaded all the dogs from their kennels they began loading up all the donated dog food, treats, toys, and even blankets into their two vans.
