ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Four corrections officers from the York County Jail stand indicted of assaulting an inmate.
Roger Souliere and John Sibya are charged with assault, criminal threatening and reckless conduct. Daniel Roy and Michael Pitts are facing assault and criminal threatening charges.
Jason Robertson was awaiting sentencing in the maximum security unit of the jail after pleading guilty to robbing a pharmacy.
The four corrections officers were called to the inmate's cell for a behavioral issue with Robertson. following an investigation by the sheriff's office, Sheriff Mo Ouelltte concluded the officers went too far in dealing with Roberston.
"As the sheriff of this county i'm charged with the care and the safety of the inmates out back and unfortunately we're all humans and we all react sometimes to things and given that particular conduct, i'm not at all willing to accept that", said Ouellette.
If the officers are convicted of the crimes they are accused of, a hearing will be held at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy to determine if they can continue as corrections officers.
