BRADFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A family of eight is safe after firefighters from seven different departments battled a basement fire in their Bradford home.
It happened at 689 Main Road. Fire officials got the call just before 11 a.m.
Bradford Fire Chief Scott DeMoranville says one of the family members at home at the time of the fire is a lieutenant with his department. According to DeMoranville, the lieutenant used his fire knowledge to get himself, family members and pets out of the home safely.
"They saw a haze of smoke in the living room," said the chief. "When they began investigating further to see where it was coming from, after he felt the basement door, he opened it and black smoke rolled out. He closed the door up and called 911."
The fire marshal is expected to determine the cause of the fire.
