ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The most recent census conducted in 2010 shows Maine's population is now more than 1.3 million, and the fastest growing city in Maine, located in Hancock County, grew by more than 1,200 people.

Ellsworth was Maine's fastest growing city between 2000-2010, and its population grew at a rate of almost 20%.  City Manager Michelle Beal says there are a number of factors for the increase in population.

She says the city has worked hard to expand and is always looking at new development opportunities and ways to grow even in recent difficult economic times.

"We're really happy because we've put a lot of investment into our infrastructure and beautification, quality of place issues, over probably the last five or six years, and so to us, it means it's working," Beal said.

After the growth over the past ten years, Beal says Ellsworth's population is now almost 8,000.
