OXFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A question surrounding the distance to Hollywood Slots in Bangor could derail the Oxford Casino.

The location of the Oxford Casino is a 100 acre site of farmland and forest along Route 26. State law currently prohibits any Maine gaming facility from opening within 100 miles of an existing one.

Backers of the Biddeford Racino are challenging the Oxford location saying it's only 94 miles from Hollywood Slots on a straight line.

"If you say within 100 miles you just measure it with a ruler. It's simple, it's easy, it can't be debated. The distance is the distance", said Ed MacColl, attorney for the Biddeford project.

Supporters of the Oxford Casino say the measurement is done by the roadway traveled there, which is 125 miles.

"All substantiated laws on the books in Maine call for road miles when dealing with gaming market areas. Its the standard in the industry", said Peter Martin, spokesman for the Oxford Casino.

Both sides expect the Maine Gambling Control Board to clarify this issue at its meeting in Augusta Friday morning at 9:00.
