LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) -- Lawrence's mayor says he has suspended three city workers for dumping snow into the Merrimack River, just one day after he caught a private contractor allegedly doing the same thing.
Mayor William Lantigua says the three Public Works Department employees have been suspended and he will move to fire them.
Dumping plowed snow, which is often full of contaminants including oil and salt, is a violation of federal environmental laws.
Lantigua tells The Eagle-Tribune that all three men, one of whom is on the school committee, are seasoned employees who should know better.
A passer-by notified police early Tuesday morning of the allegedly illegal dumping into a canal that feeds the river.
A private contractor was accused of dumping snow from a North Andover parking lot into the river on Monday.
