At the Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls teachers and staff developed a reading incentive program for their students. The program emphasizes reading at home. Students are given a reading log to take home. As they complete their log they are permitted to move their "bus" around their "community!" Along the hallways of their school is a long mural with pictures of places in their community like the post office, library and firestation. Also placed on this mural are several tiny paper buses with students names on them. When it's time to move the bus the students pull it down from the mural, walk it on to the next community place and stick it to the wall nearby! It really helps them to see how far they have come in reading as it provides a clear visual of a journey from start to finish. Students also recieve other small prizes from the "prize cart" that comes around to their classrooms periodically to give out pencils or erasers as further incentive. The program has been a spectacular success!
