SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- Voters in South Portland will decided if dogs will be allowed on Willard Beach year round, or if more restrictions will be placed on mans best friend.
On Monday night, the South Portland City Council voted 6 to 0 to send the question to the November Ballot.
The proposed rule change would ban dogs from Willard Beach between April 15th and October 15th and keep dogs on a leash for the rest of the year. Currently, dogs are allowed there, off leash, from 7 to 9 in the morning and again from 7 to 9 in the evening, from May through September, and any time during the winter and fall.
The group "Save Willard Beach" says allowing dogs on the beach has become a health concern, and that they found enough people who want to send the issue to a vote. Many of the dog owners who frequent Willard say this has nothing to do with dogs, its about having equal access to public places.
Both sides were pleased that residents of South Portland will have a say in the future of Willard Beach.
