PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine labor officials say the state's unemployment rate fell to its lowest point in more than five years last month.
Officials say in figures released Friday the state had a 5.7 percent seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for April, the lowest figure since September 2008. The figured dropped from 5.9 percent in March and 6.8 percent a year ago. The national unemployment rate was 6.3 percent for the month, and the New England rate was 6.1 percent.
Maine's not-seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in April, down from 6.9 percent one year ago. Officials say not seasonally adjusted rates ranged from 4.5 percent in Cumberland County to 10 percent in Washington County.
Maine officials say April was the 79th straight month the ratio of employment to population exceeded the national average.
