CUMBERLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Athearn family is red hot and their friends in the Standardbred industry could not be more pleased. Mark, Gretchen, Matt and Kyle all work together in their twelve horse stable and the result has been many trips to the winner circle.
The biggest was in the first leg of the Maine Sire Stakes when Fuzzylegsandall came home the winner in the $12,000 race. The winner gets half the purse. Fuzzylegsandall ran 1:56.1 tying the track record for three-year old geldings at Scarborough Downs.
"I don't know!" beamed trainer and mom Gretchen Athearn when asked why the family is having so much success. "We're doing the same things we've always done."
Son Matt is now on the track in the morning grooming and jogging horses each day. His little brother Kyle is an adept groom, often scooting around wrapping the horses ankles.
"I'm glad they're with us. It keeps them out of trouble," says Mark who had the fourth highest driver's rating in the country at the end of June.
