Making sure Mainers don't go hungry

ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — As Thanksgiving approaches, thousands of Mainers are spending time collecting food items and packing holiday meals for those in need.

The York County Shelter Program has already distributed 1,100 boxes filled with Thanksgiving favorites like cranberry sauce, stuffing and, of course, a turkey.

It plans on handing out about 2,000 boxes to local families — that is an increase from about 1,300 boxes that were handed out last year.

Organizers said they're sad to see that the need is growing, but happy that the number of volunteers has also grown.

If you don't have any dessert planned for this holiday, the York County Shelter Program is selling pies, with the profits going to shelter programs and feeding more Mainers.
