Patricia "Patsy" Leavitt (Buxton; Mary Rines Thompson Award winner) is a nurse practitioner and teacher, keeping people healthy for more than 30 years. Inspired by a family tradition of volunteerism and frustrated by the lack of access to primary health care for uninsured persons, in 2003 she devoted herself full-time to the creation of the Leavitt's Mill Free Health Center (LMFHC). LMFHC was born out of her belief that professional, respectful, and appropriate healthcare should be equally available to all. Six years and 1,000 patients later, more than 30 volunteers and a large cadre of St. Joseph's College interns provide medical and nursing care, healthy lifestyle teaching, mental health care, dental hygiene, physical therapy, and prescription access in rural Bar Mills. Patsy's vision is now providing the very best care available to a grateful and growing clientele.
